Our Daily Routine

I once participated in a "10 in 10" blog challenge to document your day - 10 pictures in 10 hours. This is kind of like that, except not . . . because my days feel approximately 37 hours long.

With the current shelter in place running rampant, I wanted to share what our days currently look like.

Honestly, they're not a whole lot different from what they were a couple weeks ago. One of the ways I support our family is caring for our children on a daily basis in our own home, raising them up in the way that my husband and I deem best, according to God's good guidance.

But if you're curious, or if you're looking for a skeleton of a daily routine to get you started, here's a look into our lives with a 1-year-old and 3-year-old.

6am - Mom and Dad up

My husband and I wake up, get ready for the day, and make coffee.

7am - Kids up + Breakfast and Devotion

Kids wake up. Breakfast as a family and morning devotion from Treasury of Daily Prayer. Kids get ready for the day.

8am - Free Play + Chores

Dad off to work. Kids free play while I start the day's laundry and cleaning.

9:30 am - Nap + Independent Play

1-year-old takes morning nap and 3-year-old plays in his room while I do chores that are easier without them around or do some work for my side hustle.

10:30 am - School

We use The Busy Toddler's Playing Preschool which focuses on play-based learning. Each unit is two weeks long where we learn one letter of the alphabet and have a coordinating theme. Every day we sing a song, recite a poem, read a theme-related book, and do two activities. Some days it takes us 15 minutes and some days an hour.

This is the time of day when we're not taking shelter in home that we'd get together for a play date with friends or go to the library for story time and check out a gazillion books.

11:30am - Lunch + Read Aloud Book

The kids run around while I put together a simple lunch for us. We frequently eat sandwiches, protein bites, crackers and cheese, fruit, yogurt, applesauce, and on special days we upgrade to chicken nuggets, meatballs, or grilled cheese. I read the kids one chapter of a book. We've read Charlotte's Web and currently working our way through Little House on the Prairie series.

12pm - Clean Up

It's important to me that our kids know how, are good at, and accept the responsibility of cleaning up. I also don't like to waste away their naptime by cleaning up their toys. So we clean up the kitchen together and put away all toys (except if we've built a special train track or Magnatile structure that morning).

1pm - Naps

The glorious time of the day when both kids sleep. I do my side work during this time, blog, read, listen to podcasts, bake, etc. Whatever it is that I need to do to fuel me up for the rest of the day, I do during this time.

3pm - Snack + Audiobook

The kids sit at the table and scarf down snacks while listening to an audiobook (currently listening to The Boxcar Children or Frog and Toad on my old phone) while I do dishes or supper meal prep.

4pm - Outside play

Whether it's a walk, trike ride, playing in the backyard, whatever. Fresh air is so good. We live within walking distance to a handful of parks that we visit several times a week. Again, when we're not taking shelter in home.

*We also sprinkle in video calls with family and lots of book reading throughout our day.

5:30pm - Supper

When the market isn't going crazy, my husband is home around 5, and he'll play with (roughhouse) with the kids while I finish up supper.

6pm - Play with Dad

When giggles and shrieks of delight run rampant, along with fun things Mom never does.

7pm - Kids to bed

After reading a Bible story and saying prayers, our Littles go to bed. And then my husband and I get to enjoy each other's company, work, do house projects, go to meetings at church, etc.

And then it starts all over again the next day.

And I love it.
